Eating healthy is expensive. There’s no doubt about that. No matter what anyone says. We have to pay more for high-quality foods like Organic, Non-GMO, fresh, and have found ways to make healthy eating more affordable, and I’m really excited to tell you about a new discovery that can help us all save lots of money on our groceries! If you’re like me, you’ve heard of Thrive Market, but have yet to really give it a serious look to see if it can really save you money. This article contains my complete Thrive Market Review, and answers the question is it worth the cost of membership

Thrive Market is an online grocery store that offers natural and organic foods, household items, hygiene products, make-up, along with other items at comparable prices you’d find at your local grocery store. Even though I have access to numerous grocery stores I’ve been a member since 2015 because of the convenience and the ability to purchase specialty items that are hard to find.

Whether we agree with it or not our schedules leave little time for meal planning, the grocery store, and cooking meals. That’s not to say we shouldn’t or still do this – I think it’s important to keep a healthy lifestyle a priority. This is one of the reason fast food and convenience items are so popular because people just don’t want to spend their extra time grocery shopping and companies are taking notice. Over the last few years, businesses have popped up everywhere working hard to make it more convenient for busy families to eat healthier. Up until then “convenience” or “fast” equaled processed and unhealthy. Well, fortunately, the tides are changing on this. Today, it’s getting much easier to fit a healthy lifestyle into your busy schedule.

Let’s start with the money part because that’s the biggest concern with most people. First and foremost, Thrive Market charges a membership fee of $59.95 a year. They say this fee allows customers to enjoy wholesome products at wholesale prices because they don’t have to mark up products like other stores do.  Thrive Market also provides free membership to a family in need with every membership purchased.

Personally, I think $59.95 is a lot to shell out if you’re not sure whether or not you’ll use the website. However, Thrive Market does offer a 30-day free trial membership so you can look over all the products, do some price comparison, and put in a couple orders. But keep in mind. You do need to give a credit card and they will automatically charge you an annual membership if you don’t cancel before the 30-days are up.

Let’s start out by answering the 2 questions that are likely already on your mind. Is it worth the yearly membership fee and will I save any money? Yes and Yes!!! Based on my current spending, I will save nearly $100 every single month, which is over $1,000 a year, so yes the $60 membership fee is totally worth it.

What is Thrive Market

Thrive Market is an online retailer with thousands of product options. You can think of them as a Whole Foods type store, but without a physical storefront. Although, if you think of them in this way, you’d actually be doing them a disservice as they offer so much more than Whole Foods or other natural grocers.

Of course, they have non-perishable grocery items, but they actually have a whole assortment of products. I was very surprised by the vast array of products they have.

Their official categories on their website include:

  1. Food
  2. Beauty, Bath, and Body
  3. Home
  4. Health
  5. Babies & Kids
  6. Pet Supplies

Again, that doesn’t really give you an idea of the selection they offer. Here are some of the more detailed categories I was surprised to find at Thrive Market:

  • Vitamins & Supplements
  • Sun & Bug
  • Makeup
  • Diapers
  • Lunch Boxes
  • Toys
  • Cleaning Products
  • Food Storage
  • Bedding
  • Yoga
  • Fermentation Kits
  • Pet Supplies

As you can see, the variety of items they offer go far beyond non-perishable grocery items. All their products are environmentally friendly and all foods are GMO-free and you can find tons of organic options as well.

I compared Thrive Market prices to prices for the exact same products at other stores like Walmart, Target, Safeway, Whole Foods, etc. I comparison shopped a few stores and picked the lowest price for comparison.

  • Coconut Secret Coconut Aminos – Thrive Market $4.99 / Other $6.49
  • Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo – Thrive Market $7.49 / Other $9.99
  • Red Boat Fish Sauce – Thrive Market $7.49 / Other $9.99
  • Siete Tortilla Chips – Thrive Market $4.39 / Other $4.99
  • Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil – Thrive Market $9.79 / Other $12.95
  • Native Forest Simple Coconut Milk – Thrive Market $2.49 / Other $2.85
  • Bare Bones Beef Bone Broth – Thrive Market $5.99 / Other $9.99
  • Simple Mills Crackers – Thrive Market $5.49 / Other $6.99
  • Thai Red Curry Paste – Thrive Market $4.49 / Other $5.99
  • Mediterranean Roasted Red Peppers – Thrive Market $2.49 / Other $3.69

As you can see above, Thrive Market is generally a little cheaper than other big-box stores. For the above products, you’d save $18.82 in total if you purchased them all at Thrive Market vs. other stores. Thus, if you make a few purchases like this, you will quickly recover the $59.95 annual membership fee.

As you can see by our review and comparison shopping notes above, we recommend signing up for a Thrive Market membership if you are a regular purchaser of healthy food and home goods! In addition, Thrive Market has some neat features we wanted to point out that make shopping very convenient and will save you time and effort.

    • Thrive Market has a convenient feature on their website that allows you to easily sort and filter products and pages by dietary needs. Just filter your page to only show products that are compliant with the diet you are looking for (Gluten-free, Organic, Paleo, AIP, Keto, Vegetarian, Vegan, Raw)
    • A handy feature Thrive Market offers is the ability to set any product to automatically autoship monthly. Do you find that you go through certain products each month and don’t want to keep adding them to your shopping list? Just set them to autoship on Thrive and they’ll be delivered at the same time each month! This is really convenient for pantry staples like almond butter, coconut aminos, snacks, etc. Also, it can work for certain home goods and personal care products (toothpaste, deodorant, tampons, supplements, soap, etc.).Once you set up autoship, you do have to remember to cancel any products you don’t want before the next scheduled ship date. This is something to keep in mind when using this feature.
  • KITS:
    • Another neat thing Thrive Market offers are kits. We really like the starter kits, which generally contain 5-10 staple & popular products from categories such as Paleo, Whole30, Vegan, Keto, AIP, etc. These are perfect for people just starting out and looking to stock their pantry with compliant products. Thrive also has other great kits that package products in categories such as home cleaning, spices, gluten-free baking, snacks and best sellers.
    • Who doesn’t like a free gift every now and then? Occasionally when you order, Thrive Market will throw in a product absolutely free! This is a unique gift from Thrive that lets you try out something that you might not have normally ordered!

Who is Thrive Market Best For?

Not everyone will benefit from a Thrive Market membership. If you would rather spend $1 on vegetable oil than $10 on avocado oil, then Thrive Market is not for you. Thrive is only for the people who are so committed to their family’s health that they are willing to pay extra for high-quality food.

Thrive Market prices are better than those of Whole Foods, but they will likely never beat the highly processed convenience foods you find at Walmart or your local grocery chain.

In my opinion, Thrive is for 3 groups of people all of whom are dedicated to their health. They’re willing to spend a little extra for wholesome food, but at the same time, looking for ways to reduce their food bill.  These 3 groups are:

  1. Planners and Savers
  2. Small Town Healthy Families
  3. Poor Souls without a Local Costco
