What Is A Health Coach?

I’m pretty sure between social media, the news and the know It all that you probably heard the term Health Coach.  I often find when I tell someone that I’m a certified health coach, they have absolutely no Idea what I’m talking about. Health and wellness coaches are popping up In doctor’s offices, spas, gyms and private practices all over the country. They often offer services and fill gaps that doctors, nutritionists, and dietitians don’t have the time or resources to fill.

Disclaimer: I am a Certified Health Coach, not a nutritionist. I am currently studying to become a nutritionist now. Today’s post Is about Health Coaches and what we do. Not all health coaches are certified. I am certified meaning I can do more than just a standard health coach. I am not a doctor! Health Coach: A wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates Individuals to cultivate positive health choice. Certified Health Coaches educate and support clients to health coaches like me are highly educated guides In the fields of nutrition, wellness,bio-individuality, physiology, and mentoring. There are many different types of health coach certifications out there. I am trained In over 100 Dietary theories and lifestyle coaching techniques to help you discover exactly what I need to help you discover exactly what will bring you success In your fitness, health, and nutrition goals. Health coaching focuses not only on the food you eat but also your lifestyle. We help you to maximize the results of each. 

Have you ever been given or seen a list of “eat this, not that?” Have you found that making drastic changes at once are unsustainable and don’t work for you long-term? Perhaps a friend of yours lost a bunch of weight on one particular “Diet”, but when you tried It, the results were minimal at best? That’s where health coaches come In. We help you Implement small changes, little by little, at a pace that’s comfortable for you so you can meet all your health goals. We work with you to help you discover your bio-individuality. There Is something that will work for you – the trick Is finding It.

Whether your goal Is to lose weight, Increase energy or just want to get healthier, health coaches take the time to listen to your concerns, answer any questions you may have and help you discover where you are struggling, and where you want to be. We help you navigate the health world of contradictory nutritional advice to help figure out what will work for your body. Everybody bodies are different and our bodies all need different things to achieve optimal health, nutrition, and fitness.

I have said this time and time again. Everybody Is unique when It comes to eating. That’s why no one “Diet” will work for everyone. If It does work for you It may only work for a small amount of time. As a certified Health Coach, I DO NOT promote any one type of specific “Diet”I also DO NOT promote any one way of eating. I will help you experiment with all different types of eating until I help you find a way that works best for you and your unique body type. As a certified Health Coach, I am also trained to help you make any lifestyle changes that may be keeping you from achieving your overall health goals. I am also trained and part of my certification Is helping those with diabetes. I can’t prescribe medicine but what I can do Is help a diabetic patient with lifestyle and food changes so that way they can get off any diabetic medicines.

Many health coaches also work In private practices or doctors offices. Also, most health coaches work for themselves. I am a health coach that works for herself. I do what health coaches do when they work for a practice. I can still help people with a plan of actions when It comes to their overall fitness, health, and nutrition goals.

I also want to say It Is Important to know what I am not. I am not a doctor! Health coaches don’t diagnose conditions, treat medical conditions, or prescribe medications. Also, many health coaches are not personal trainers. I am currently In school studying Exercise Physiology to become a glorified personal trainer or Exercise Physiologist. Some basic personal trainers have certification where I am going for a degree. Certifications don’t really teach you the science behind the moves. I am learning the science behind each move how to prevent Injury how to trainer a person with Injury or specific health condition relating to the muscles.

A health coach Is not a drill sergeant. We do not scream orders at you, or berate you for not meeting the goal In a specified amount of time. We understand that life happens, and we work with you and support you In every way we can to achieve optimal wellness.

Final Thoughts

Health Coaches and Personal Trainers are not here to make you feel worthless In any way. Honestly, every health coach or personal trainer started at the beginner from day 0 just like you. We all hit walls had our setbacks and at the end of the day we just had to keep finding the motivation to keep going. We aren’t here to tell you not to eat that donut (I am all for donuts!) We are here to help you get to where you want to get to In the timely manner that you want. We are friends and we can even become family and some of us even become therapists.
